Winner of the Grand Prix at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, this richly layered Norwegian drama reunites director Joachim Trier with Renate Reinsve, the star of their acclaimed collaboration The Worst Person in the World. The film also features standout performances from Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning.
Reinsve plays Nora Borg, a successful Oslo stage actress whose carefully managed life is disrupted when her estranged father, Gustav (Skarsgård) — a once-celebrated filmmaker — suddenly reappears. Hoping to stage a comeback, Gustav writes a deeply personal film and asks Nora to play the lead. When she refuses, the role goes instead to a rising American star, Rachel Kemp (Fanning), who slowly realises she has stepped into a story far closer to the Borg family’s private history than she ever expected.
Meanwhile Nora’s younger sister Agnes (Lilleaas), whose life has taken a quieter, family-centred path, begins to uncover long-buried memories from their childhood. As old grievances surface and fragile attempts at reconciliation begin, the sisters are forced to confront the complicated legacy left by their father — and the emotional fault lines that still run through their family.
Tender, perceptive and quietly powerful, Sentimental Value explores how memory, art, and storytelling can reopen old wounds while also offering the possibility of healing.
