Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons reunite with Kinds of Kindness director Yorgos Lanthimos for this audacious black comedy that blends hostage thriller, conspiracy culture, and biting social satire.
Burgonia centres on two conspiracy-obsessed young men who are convinced that the powerful CEO of a major corporation is not merely corrupt, but an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. Certain they alone can see the truth, they kidnap her in a delusional attempt to “save” humanity.
As the hostage situation unfolds, Lanthimos leans into his trademark mix of deadpan humour and creeping unease. The film skewers the seductive logic of conspiracy thinking, the fragility of certainty, and the absurd extremes people will reach when belief hardens into obsession. Power shifts constantly, motivations blur, and the question of who is truly dangerous becomes increasingly unclear.
Sharp, unsettling, and darkly funny, Burgonia feels both wildly surreal and uncomfortably of-the-moment. Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons bring unpredictable energy and edge, anchoring a film that is as provocative as it is entertaining.
