Winner of the Panorama Audience Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, Deaf (Sorda) is a powerful and deeply affecting Spanish drama about motherhood, communication, and the challenges of navigating a world that often overlooks those who experience it differently.
Ángela, a deaf woman living in rural Spain, is expecting her first child with her hearing partner, Héctor. While the couple look forward to becoming parents, Ángela finds herself increasingly anxious about what motherhood will mean for her and how she will connect with a child growing up in a hearing world. When their daughter is born, those concerns become reality, placing new pressures on their relationship and forcing both parents to confront questions of identity, independence, and belonging.
Written and directed by Eva Libertad and featuring an outstanding performance by deaf actress Miriam Garlo, Deaf offers an authentic and compassionate portrayal of the deaf experience. At the same time, it speaks to universal fears about parenthood, partnership, and the desire to be understood by the people we love. Thoughtful, emotionally resonant, and beautifully observed, Deaf is a film that invites empathy while telling a compelling and deeply human story.
