A holiday getaway, a mysterious stash of forgotten weed, and a serious case of the munchies… The Weed Eaters puts a very Kiwi spin on the horror-comedy genre, delivering a wildly entertaining tale of friendship, bad decisions, and a hunger that goes far beyond snacks.
When Jules (Alice May Connolly) joins her new boyfriend and his old high school friends for a relaxed New Year’s Eve getaway, she is hoping for a quiet break — a chance to unwind, smoke some weed, and get to know the people closest to her boyfriend. But when the group discovers their holiday host’s long-forgotten stash of ancient cannabis, their laid-back escape quickly turns into something far more sinister.
At first, the effects seem like the ultimate case of the munchies. But when the group realise this strange strain of weed has given them an uncontrollable craving for human flesh, their dream holiday becomes a nightmare. What follows is a chaotic and darkly comic spiral of panic, guilt, blame, and increasingly desperate attempts to hide what has happened.
As their friendship begins to unravel and their hunger takes over, Jules finds herself fighting not only for survival but also to hold onto her own sense of right and wrong. Surrounded by chaos and accidental cannibalism, she may be the only one left who can stop things from getting even worse.
A uniquely New Zealand horror-comedy, The Weed Eaters combines outrageous humour with plenty of gore, creating a bizarre and unforgettable ride through the consequences of one very bad idea. Beneath the absurd premise is a sharp look at friendship, peer pressure, and how quickly things can spiral when people are pushed to their limits.
Starring Alice May Connolly, The Weed Eaters is a fun, fearless slice of local genre filmmaking — perfect for anyone who enjoys their horror with a generous serving of dark humour.
