Set against the stunning coastal backdrop of Brittany, The Scammers (À l'ancienne) is a warm-hearted French comedy about friendship, community, and the lengths ordinary people will go to when fortune unexpectedly comes knocking.

Life on a tiny island is turned upside down when a local resident wins millions in the national lottery. But before he can claim his prize, he dies from the shock of his good fortune—with the winning ticket still in his possession. Faced with an opportunity too tempting to ignore, lifelong friends Jean-Jean and Henri hatch an audacious plan to claim the winnings themselves. Before long, their scheme draws in the entire village, creating a cascade of lies, misunderstandings, and increasingly ridiculous complications.

Directed by Hervé Mimran and starring French screen favourites Didier Bourdon and Gérard Darmon, The Scammers combines broad comedy with genuine affection for its eccentric characters. Adapted from the beloved Irish classic Waking Ned Devine, the film relocates the story to rural Brittany, where the close-knit island community becomes as important as the scam itself.

Filled with colourful personalities, picturesque scenery and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, The Scammers is a charming celebration of friendship, solidarity and small-town mischief. Beneath its comic premise lies a simple question: when luck finally arrives, who really deserves to share in it?

Light, entertaining and full of Gallic charm, The Scammers is the kind of feel-good comedy best enjoyed with an audience.
