Nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, The Stranger is a striking and atmospheric adaptation of Albert Camus’ classic novel, brought to the screen by acclaimed French director François Ozon (When Fall is Coming, Frantz).
Algiers, 1938. Meursault is a quiet, unassuming man in his early thirties who seems curiously detached from the world around him. When his mother dies, he attends her funeral without shedding a tear. The following day, he returns to his ordinary routine, beginning a casual relationship with his work colleague Marie and carrying on with little apparent disruption to his life.
But Meursault’s indifference and refusal to behave as society expects soon begin to draw attention. His neighbour, Raymond Sintès, involves him in a web of shady dealings, pulling Meursault into circumstances that are increasingly beyond his control.
Then, on a blisteringly hot day at the beach, a chance encounter leads to a tragic act that changes everything.
Ozon’s The Stranger captures Camus’ unsettling portrait of a man who refuses to pretend that life has meaning simply because society demands that it does. With its sun-drenched Algerian setting, simmering tension and compelling central performance, the film explores alienation, morality, justice and the uneasy relationship between an individual and the world around him.
A thoughtful and beautifully realised adaptation of one of the 20th century’s most influential novels.
