Jim Jarmusch brings his trademark dry humour and beautifully understated style to this intimate triptych about family, featuring a stellar cast including Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling and Vicky Krieps.
Told across three separate stories, Father Mother Sister Brother explores the complicated relationships between grown-up children and their parents, and the sometimes awkward bonds between brothers and sisters. From one story to the next, Jarmusch finds humour and poignancy in the everyday encounters, misunderstandings and unspoken feelings that come with being part of a family.
Each story offers a different glimpse into the strange business of knowing—and sometimes barely knowing—the people closest to us. There are old grievances, uncomfortable conversations, unexpected tenderness and plenty of the deadpan wit that has become a Jarmusch trademark.
With its exceptional ensemble cast, gorgeous cinematography and quietly observant storytelling, Father Mother Sister Brother is a funny, melancholic and wonderfully human look at family relationships, ageing and all the things we don't quite manage to say to one another.
